Tow Vehicles That Are Great Daily Drivers

by Lori Straus

Pickup trucks aren’t always the best choice for daily driving. It can be difficult to comfortably seat all your family in them, even if they have a second row. In addition, the lack of a bona fide trunk can make retrieving your bags difficult. We’ve collected lists of top vehicles with tow packages for you that aren’t pick-ups: from 2020 for those looking for a new vehicle to 2016 for readers looking for a used vehicle. You should have no problem finding the right tow vehicle for you.

Towing in Ontario

Using your car to tow your trailer in Ontario is fairly easy: make sure you have a valid driver’s license, that your trailer does not exceed 4,600 kilograms (10,000 pounds), and that your trailer has brakes strong enough to stop and hold the trailer if the trailer weighs more than 1,360 kilograms (or 2,992 pounds).

However, the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario also recommends that you follow a few simple rules when packing your trailer:

  • Strap everything down inside and outside. It is actually an offence to have a load that may become dislodged or fall off.
  • Make sure that any load in your trailer is appropriate for the trailer and hitch. A load that exceeds the recommended maximum weight can strain your vehicle and damage your tires, wheel bearings, and axle.
  • If you’re towing a boat and plan to pack additional cargo into it, ensure you have a trailer for that purpose.
  • About 5 to 10% of your trailer’s total weight should be supported on the hitch and stay within the weight limit marked on it.
  • Generally, heavy and unbalanced loads can pull down the rear of your tow vehicle and lift the front end. This will affect your steering, possibly the aim of your headlights, and the alignment of your mirrors. In short, you won’t have full control of the vehicle, could be blinding oncoming drivers, and won’t be able to accurately see behind you.
